The Cordillera Mountain Ultra 2018

The townspeople of Dalupirip, Itogon welcomed over 700 people last March 3-4 at this year’s Cordillera Mountain Ultra.

Organized by the Cordillera Conservation Trust (CCT), the CMU is an outdoor race unlike any other. The CMU trail had every runner weaving through the southern slopes of Mt Ugo, offering incredible views of the hills and mountains while making their way through lush pine forests. Aside from conserving the wild spaces of the Cordilleras, the CCT also keeps the community involved by creating an economy through the CMU.

This year, they’re celebrating the Cordilleras’ creative culture after Baguio was recently named the Philippines’ first UNESCO Creative City. Trophies for the 50 km race were created by local artist Lito Malagay, each piece taking three days for him to sculpt and displays the native garb and musical instruments of the Cordillera region. The sculptures were made of copper wire, a material that the mining areas of Itogon produce much of.

The 50 km champions took home the trophies, after men’s champion Harry Jones finished in a record-breaking 5 hours, 20 minutes while the women’s champion, Carole Fuchs, finished in 6 hours, 26 minutes. Watch the interview with the CMU champions.
